Simultaneous ambiguity of literal transparency
-
In Donnell Garden, designed by Thomas Church, two volumes of space could be seen simultaneously. One was composed of a concrete floor and a stone wall (A). The other was composed of a ceiling, a concrete block wall and columns (B).
In Small Park near Gridley, designed by Garrett Eckbo, two volumes of space could be seen simultaneously. One was enclosed by hedges (C). The other was enclosed by trees (D). Lines of sight would not be blocked because the hedges were lower than eye level and there were enough spaces between the tree trunks.
